A prenuptial agreement is more than a way to protect your financial interests before entering into a marriage. A prenuptial agreement can also be a way to protect those who count on you for financial security, such as children from a prior marriage and elderly parents. At The Barbknecht Firm, P.C., our job as lawyers is to help you protect not only your financial interests, but also interests of loved ones who rely on you.

Think of a prenup as an insurance policy. You would do well to have a prenuptial agreement if:

  • If you have accumulated significant assets prior to your marriage, especially if there is a significant disparity in what both parties bring to the marriage.
  • If you have significant ongoing responsibilities to other people such as children or aging parents.
  • You have assets that are important to you that you want to be separate or nonmarital property as a part of any future divorce settlement.

Postnuptial Agreements
A postnuptial agreement is a financial arrangement that is entered into after marriage. It can be used to resolve underlying financial issues that could be causing undue stress in your marriage. It can also be used to amend a prenuptial agreement that is entered into prior to marriage.
